What We Do

North East Specialized Geriatrics Centre (NESGC) provides specialized geriatric assessment and treatment to medically complex, frail older adults living in the community. Our services include physician consultation in geriatric medicine, as well as physiotherapy, occupational therapy, continence, and bone health services, and nurse practitioner services.

Northeastern Ontario

NESGC collaborates closely with other services and partners across Northeastern Ontario to ensure that individuals receive the care they need, when and where they need it. For example, some of our partners include local and regional hospitals, rehabilitation organizations, long-term care facilities, North East Local Health Integration Network (NE LHIN), Community Care Access Centres (CCAC), and community services, as well as family physicians, family health teams, and community health centres. Stronger together, NESGC and our regional partners strive to provide the best care possible to older adults and their caregivers in Northeastern Ontario.

This is accomplished through a specialized team of health care professionals, including a Geriatrician, Care of the Elderly Physicians, a Nurse Practitioner, Geriatric Nurse Clinicians (Registered Nurses), Physiotherapist, Occupational Therapist, Social Worker, as well as a dedicated administrative and leadership team.

Regional Leadership

As a Regional Geriatric Program (RGP) we are governed by a Regional System Steering Committee. The Steering Committee is responsible for facilitating provincial- and NE LHIN-supported strategies and providing leadership in support of NESGC advancing its regional development. Furthermore, the Steering Committee is tasked with recommending evidence-informed directions in care and promoting education, dissemination, and capacity building in specialized geriatric services across our region.

In addition to delivering education and building capacity for geriatric medicine, NESGC and its Steering Committee provide leadership regarding the development and coordination of seniors’ health services across Northeastern Ontario. For example NESGC is fundamental in advancing clinical practice and service delivery, education, research and evaluation, and planning of broader specialized geriatric services.
