North East Specialized Geriatric Centre (NESGC) provides leadership, education, and consultation in geriatric medicine. Geriatric medicine is a subspecialty that works to promote, prevent and treat disease, disability, and frailty in later life. Identification and treatment of geriatric syndromes (e.g., cognitive impairment, falls, continence, etc.) is complex and multifactorial requiring a multidisciplinary approach.
Specifically, NESGS serves community-living frail older adults who experience a broad scope of health challenges, including complex medical challenges, changes in cognitive functioning, mental health concerns, falls, incontinence, Parkinson’s disease, and functional decline. Moreover, we serve individuals who experience increased healthcare utilization, such as multiple visits to the emergency room or hospitalization), as well as their caregivers whom may be struggling to cope with the care and support they provide to their loved ones.
Given the nature of health concerns in older adults, more time is devoted to each appointment to ensure that a patient’s concerns and goals are understood. Through our care, we strive to promote good health, reduce functional decline, and improve the quality of life for the older adults we serve.
